Summary of the tour

  • Day 1 – Scenic train ride from Colombo to Badulla

  • Day 2 – Visit the Bogoda Bridge and Dunhinda Falls

  • Day 3 –Return to Fort Railway Station in Colombo

Ride through Muthurajawela marshlands, villages and vast paddy fields and tea plantations.  Enjoy the breathtaking views from the narrow ledges of steep escarpments. Go past beautiful waterfalls, through long dark tunnels and over ancient arch bridges - built with blocks of stone and cement alone!

This enchanting railway was initially built by the British for the coffee cultivation. The first section from Colombo to Ambepussa was opened in 1864 and later extended in sections to Kandy, Nawalapitiya, Hatton, Nanu Oya, Bandarawela and finally finished in 1924 at Badulla. The unsuccessful coffee plantations were replaced by tea, that made this railway line not more popular and profitable but also more and more beautiful. Since then, the main road has taken over the bulk of the transport business, but the railway has not lost its appeal. Today, it offers an exceptional way to immerse in the Sri Lankan history and gorgeous sceneries.
